Tips on planning an event

Make sure the purpose for the special event is important enough to merit the time and expense needed to properly stage, publicize and evaluate the event.

Carefully match the type of event that is selected to the purpose that it serves. Do you want to reach out to new users or thank your supporters?

Target groups that have a special stake in the event.

Start planning at least three months, and in many cases, a year ahead of time.

Develop ways to evaluate the event's success.

Make a checklist

A checklist provides a step-by-step guide to organizing and executing a special event.

Create a budget

The objective is to provide event planners with a financial blueprint. The budget should be specific, and include revenue opportunities (sponsorship, ticket sales, donations. concession sales) as well as expenses printing, permits, insurance, speakers, food. supplies, security).

Consider logistics

With many activities going on simultaneously, there are many details to be checked. Major areas to consider and plan for include: size of space or building used, utility support needed, setup (tables and chairs. tents, portable toilets, parking, signage) coordination, cleanup, emergency plans. transportation, and public services such as police and fire departments.

Plan publicity

Promoting a special event takes creative thinking balanced with practicality. The primary objective is to publicize the event, but secondary objectives should be considered.

Are you trying to inform, educate or entertain?

Increase awareness or attendance of the event?

Build a base support from a specific audience?

Facilitate good community relations?

Brainstorm all the available media in including marquees, school newsletters, church announcements, and cable and commercial stations. Make a detailed list with names of whom to contact and when.

Evaluate the event

Take time to evaluate right after the event while the details are fresh. You may want to consider having a questionnaire for participants to fill out. Some general evaluative criteria include:

Did the event fulfill its goals and objectives? Why or why not?

Identify what worked and what needs fine-tuning. Which vendors should be used again?

What items were missing on the checklist?

Was the event well attended?

Was informal and formal feedback about the event positive?

Given all that went into staging, was it worth doing?

House Warming Party

Housewarmings are a great way to meet your neighbors and a reason to celebrate your big home-purchase with friends and family (OK, and lets be honest – cool gifts for your new pad…).

You dont have to do much for a housewarming, but provide a little something to eat and maybe a cocktail or refreshment. This will allow your guests to mingle freely and take a tour of your new abode. After all, the party is to show off your castle!

Before you start brainstorming about your next event, you have to figure out the the perfect location for your fabulous party. You will need to figure out a few details:

• Budget: Your budget will help decide the location and other details of planning your party.
• Guest List: The amount of guests will determine the size of the space you require.
• Party Theme: If you are making a theme for your party, it is best to find a venue that will accommodate the look you seek.

Personalized Party Locations
When planning a party, keep in mind that you don’t have to stick with the space restrictions and rules that apply to formal venues like weddings. Pick sites that you have seen and loved. Try a park, old movie theater, wineries, your local club house, restaurants, a family member’s home, or the beach, to name just a few.

Unique Party Themes
As I described in one of my earlier posts, try a red party, or whatever color you love. Try a masquerade party, a Hawaiian theme, or a costume party. There are so many themes you can enjoy!

Stick with your budget. If your venue is a little pricey, try doing DIY projects to cut costs. That will help you afford your favorite venue.

Don’t forget to enjoy yourself!

When I was planning my wedding, I saw this beautiful cake. I knew it was the one I wanted – it would look beautiful after it got blinged out! I did a tasting and obtained a few quotes – the asking price was $600.00. Goodness, that’s a whole lot of money! Time for plan B. So I went to the local grocery store and gave them a picture of my inspiration. I ordered a cake from the grocery store for 80 people, even though we had 100 guests. This cut the price down by almost $300.00! I went to Costco, and bought a sheet cake for $20.00 to feed the rest of our guests. The local grocery store cake was just as tasty and my guests had no clue. For your next event, consult with your local grocery store baker; you would be surprised at how much you can save.

Here's a time line I like to follow:

ALL BLACK B DAY BASH/EVERYTHING BELLA LAUNCH PARTY

Go Genae it's your birthday!! OK so I just had my B Day Party/ Launch Party!! It was Fabulous! The theme was a strict dress code ALL BLACK. Of course me being the Diva I am had to stand out, so I chose to wear RED. As for the decor I wanted a club feel so I used black linen, variety of red center pieces I made. I kept thinking to myself I needed a WOW factor, then it hit me, up lights in red!! The party looked just how I had imagined it but even better. For your next party make it a theme, all black, white, red, yellow, what ever your favorite color maybe.

DIY Cocktail Napkins

You will need:

Smarty Had A Party 2 Ply Cocktail Napkins
Rubber Stamp
Brilliance Archival Pigment Ink

The rubber stamp and ink can be found at your local hobby or craft store, you also can find these products on-line. If ordered on-line you can have the stamp custom design to fit your wedding or party theme. The archival ink dries fast and does not stain or smear.
I suggest buying 2x2 size stamp for cocktail napkins, if you get dinner napkins I would suggest you get it bigger.
Tip:
When purchasing your napkins always buy extra. Out of 300 napkins only 275 made it. It takes a few tries to get the stamp just right.

When it comes to planning your next event don't be afraid to try a mock up. As I planned my wedding I learned by trial and error. The best way to figure out if your decor or table setting is going to look like the vision you had in your head is to do a mock up. After three trial runs my inspiration came to life.

DIY CRYSTAL TREE

DIY Mock-Up:

Supplies purchased/used:

Crystals: www.shopwildthings.com (crystals sold as "beaded curtains") They're acrylic crystal stands. I simply cut the strands from the curtain rail and then cut them into various lengths to hang on the branches. **They're also the same crystal strands I used as a prop in my boudoir pics...lol**
Branches: SF Flower Mart And from www.bloomsandbranches.com
Base/Vase (Urn): Michael's (local craft store)
Silk Orchids: Michael's (Purchased on stems) I trimmed blooms with wire cutters and used low-temp glue gun to adhere to branches.

Ribbon (on "table"): SF Flower Mart

Votives (not pictured): www.FlowerSupplies.com

Tools needed for this project:

Low-temp Glue Gun & Glue sticks (to adhere flowers and crystals to branches)
Spray Foam Insulation (found at hardware stores & is typically used to fill cracks and crevices around doors and windows during construction). Its inexpensive, light-weight, extremely easy to use and VERY sticky!!! Be careful when using...whatever the foam gets on, its there forever...seriously.
Painter's Tape (to hold branches in place in the Vase/Urn while filling with foam insulation)
Wire Cuters (to snip silk flowers off stems).

*Total Cost: Approx. $25 each centerpiece (not including Tools, Ribbon, and Votives)

Assembly:

I used spray foam insulation to hold the branches in place. It worked really well...inexpensive, light-weight and easy to use. I used "painter's" tape to wrap around the base of each branch and secured to the vase/urn just the way I wanted it to set (see picture below). Once the tape was secure, I sprayed the foam according to the directions. Remember to allow for the expansion. Most foam insulation doubles in size. To ensure it dried thuroughly, I sprayed one layer at a time. It took about an hour to dry to the touch. Once filled and dried, I removed the tape and used extra crystal strands to cover the foam. It looks almost like the vase/urn was overflowing with crystals. *TIP: Between use of the spray foam, leave the straw on the can and leave it filled with the foam. It will expand within the "straw" by oozing out a little. Let it dry like that...it will keep from the entire can from drying out. When you go to use it again, gently press the "trigger" and the dried foam in the straw will push right out. Use wax paper on your work surface to keep the foam from sticking to your table/work surface.

Once the crystals were cut from the curtain rail, I cut them into varying lengths (approx. 24"-30" or so) Drape crystals on the branches. You can add as many as desired. I've seen some trees that are filled with crystals and look like Weeping Willow trees. I preferred less. For my branches, I used about 15 strands of crystals for each branch. I placed the strands so the hang on the branch about midway of the strand.

Add silk blooms (if desired). I put 2 blooms together (back-to-back) so that the back of the bloom didn't show. I placed five pairs throughout each branch (10 blooms per tree). In terms of design, odd numbers are best for arranging things like this.

I used votive candles on the tables for ambiance and to add sparkle to the crystals. Extra crystal strands were used as filler/cover on the top of the base. In place of table runners, I used ribbon. I pre-cut them into desired lengths (same length as table linens) and re-rolled them for easy storing and transporting.

I purchased my crystals from www.shopwildthings.com. They're acrylic crystal strand "curtains." I simply cut the strands from the curtain rail and then cut them into various lengths to hang on the branches.

DIY Cup Cake Stand

Cake boards: 1×8″, 1×10″, 1×12″
Note: if you want one more tire on the stand. You will need 1×14″ cake board.Polysthyrene cake dummies 2″ high: 2X5″ and 2×6″
Note: You will need 2×7″ polysthyrene cake dummies for one more tire.

Satin ribbon for the cake board and the polysthyrene cake dummies

Thick paper or sugarpaste/rolled fondant icing

Glue stick and regular glue
Note: use school glue

Metal pins

Sharp scissor

Step 1:
Start by glue the dummies together. So they can dry completely.

Step 2:
Take your chosen ribbon, and attach it on the dummies with a metal pin.
Note: you can also glue the ribbon on. But I want to use the dummies again. So therefor I have not glued my ribbon on

Step 3:
When the dummies are dry, start by wrapping the ribbon around them so it slightly overlap all the way to the top.
Note: the metal pin on the picture, was only put in so I could take the picture.

Step 4:
Attach the ribbon with a metal pin.

Step 5:
Lay the cake boards on the choosen paper. Take your pencil and draw a line around the board on the paper. Cut out wih a pair of scissors.

Step 6:
Take the glue stick and add glue throughly all over the board.

Step 7:
Place the paper cirkel on the cake board and rub it lightly.

Step 8:
Now it is time to attache the ribbon to the side of the cake board. Add a metal pin to just keep the ribbon in place.

Step 9:
If you like you can rub a bit of glue on the side so the ribbon stays in place. End by taking the metal pin and attache it to the overlaps.

Step 10:
Now your cake stand is finished.
Note: I have not assembled my cake stand with glue, but you could do that for an extra safety. If you use iced cake boards you can use royal icing to fix it if you like.

On this cake stand used 7″, 10″, 13″ but reccomend to use the cake board size’s above.

DIY Memeorial Candles

This is a very simple DIY project. All you need is ink jet vellum, glass cylinders, votives and ribbon.

After finishing your design, I would first print it out on regular paper and put it around your cylinder so you know for sure that its exactly how you want it. When you've finalized your design, then print it on your ink jet vellum (you can find vellum at your local scrapbook store, Michael's or JoAnn's).

Before permanently adhering the vellum, double-check the heigth of your vellum and if needed trim any extra with a paper cutter or scissors. Using double-stick tape or adhesive, line one edge of the vellum. Wrap around the cylinder and secure.

Next, take your ribbon and wrap around the bottom of the cylinder to see how much you need. Cut and place on the table. Use your double-stick tape or adhesive and put a strip on the ribbon the same length. Adhere the ribbon to the bottom of the cylinder and secure at the back. Repeat this process if you'd like to put ribbon at the top as well.

Put a votive candle or LED light in each. Do not use a tall candle as this will not illuminate the entire cylinder.

Body Scrub Recipe

Sugar Scrub

Ingredients

1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

1/3 cup sugar

3-5 drops of any scented extract for the desired fragrance.

Preparation

Mix, and let it refrigerate for 2 hours.

Mix well again, and use on your face, hands, arms, and body to gently exfoliate.

This recipe is gentle enough to be used every day.

You can choose so many different options that it makes this sugar scrub the best, especially considering how inexpensive it is to make! Choose brown sugar for a very soft, very gentle scrub. This is good for a first-time sugar scrub for teenage girls, as it will exfoliate without being to harsh. Choose granulated sugar for a slightly more invigorating scrub. This is more ideal for people who have skin issues, as it really gets your pores clean. Choose raw sugar for a more thorough clean, which is perfect for a deep cleansing.

Residency Requirement:

Do not have to be a resident of Georgia. However, if not a resident, you must apply in the county where the marriage is to be performed.

Identification Requirement

Two valid forms of id such as drivers license, birth certificate, U. S. passport, Armed Forces ID card, or Resident Alien ID card. Applicants will also be asked to fill out a brief form.

Premarital Education

Cobb County offers a free Marital Workshop called FOCUS ON FOREVER. It is a skill-based non-religious workshop designed to address issues concerning communication and listening skills, anger management, and financial planning. Contact the Cobb County Superior Court for more information.

By state law, counties in Georgia now charge more for a marriage license if you do not show certification of a premarital education program.

Previous Marriage

If divorced within six months, you will need to show a copy of your divorce decree.

Some counties require a final divorce decree no matter how long you have been divorced. You can obtain a copy of your final divorce decree from the Superior Court in the county in which you filed for divorce.

Waiting Period

There is no waiting period for getting married in Georgia.

DIY Projects

Memorial candles
This is a very simple DIY project. All you need is ink jet vellum, glass cylinders, votive and ribbon.

After finishing your design, I would first print it out on regular paper and put it around your cylinder so you know for sure that its exactly how you want it. When you've finalized your design, then print it on your ink jet vellum (you can find vellum at your local scrapbook store, Michael's or JoAnn's).

Before permanently adhering the vellum, double-check the height of your vellum and if needed trim any extra with a paper cutter or scissors. Using double-stick tape or adhesive, line one edge of the vellum. Wrap around the cylinder and secure.

Next, take your ribbon and wrap around the bottom of the cylinder to see how much you need. Cut and place on the table. Use your double-stick tape or adhesive and put a strip on the ribbon the same length. Adhere the ribbon to the bottom of the cylinder and secure at the back. Repeat this process if you'd like to put ribbon at the top as well.

Put a votive candle or LED light in each. Do not use a tall candle as this will not illuminate the entire cylinder.

I thought it only be right to start off with my own wedding. You will see all the details I put in to my wedding and all them money that I saved.

How love started

May 16 2009 will be exactly 4 years we have been together, of all places we met online. We chatted on the phone for a few weeks and decided we had too much in common so we had to meet. We set a date and time and hit it off when we met in person. We have been together ever since, we now have a daughter Sidney that was born Jan. 2 2008. She’s in love with him and he’s in love with her, I have to say that’s his little princess.

The Day of the Wedding

I had a hair appt at 6 am and ended up waking up at 6:30. I rushed to the hair dressers and by the time I got there I had 6 girls in front of me including another bride. So I knew I was screwed, I sat for hours waiting for my turn. In the mean time my phone was ringing off the hook, fiance was complaining about dropping things off to the venue. I was so stressed with things not being done due to me waiting on my hair to be done. I broke down and cried right there in front of everyone while my hair dresser did my hair. The stress hit me hard....

My BM were all waiting on me to check into the hotel for the makeup artist to do the makeup and I was stuck at the shop. About 2 pm I called the hotel and put the room in my girl friend’s name so she could check in for me (problem solved) and I finally left the dang hair dresser after sitting and waiting 7 hours.

So let’s forward a bit, hubby couldn't fit everything on his truck so he took what he could & I rushed home grabbed the kids & rest of the items, dress, etc & rushed to the venue & dropped everything off. I rushed to the hotel, by this time I am worn out & not happy.

Finally I get to the hotel & see all my BMs; I give them their gift bags which they love (big hit). They started to cry & then I cried, it was an emotional moment. So it’s time to head to the venue, it took valet 30 mins to get the cars (The Hilton) horrible valet service.

We arrive at the venue and the first person I see is my step mom and she starts to cry so I start to cry. My dad was standing in his tux & handed me his hanky. We practiced our walk right before it was my moment. It was time, the doors open & soon as I walk in the room I started crying again. All could see was flashes of lights from the cameras, when I looked around I couldn't believe my eyes the set up was beautiful. All my hard work and projects had come to life! We partied all night, it went so fast and the night went off with out a hitch. Thanks to my DOC Amy, she rocked!

My Budget Savvy Wedding $5,157.98

The Dress
It all started with my dress, I found my dress "the one"! My grandmother and I went to the boutique and try the dress on when I saw the price tag my jaw dropped $4000.00, goodness that was almost the price of my wedding budget. So I went to plan B, I heart EBAY so my search began. It didn't take me long until I came upon this beauty, she was the one!!!

I paid $130.00 including taxes. This is when my vision came into play, I love the detailing around the waste. I felt the dress was a classic, it would never be dated. Then it hit me 40s vintage chic, that's it!

The 2nd Dress

It was Friends and family day at Macy's when I came up upon this gorgeous dress, only one in my size. $80.00

The Jewelry

I found my dream jewelry, until I called about the price $500.00 for the set. As a budget bride no way could I pay that amount. I found a vendor on Esty that made jewelry, I sent her a picture of what I wanted and she said she could make something like it for me for $50.00 and made the matching bracelet for $35.00

I just had to have a TTD ( trash the dress) so I called up my wedding photog and she did the beauties for me.
